Due to the many options available, many people favour defining what they need from their software before they begin to search for an appropriate solution. A dizzying array of capabilities exists, but these capacities vary from program to program.

The choices among computer animation software can be overwhelming. Many have found that with patience and perseverance, a solution that suites their needs can be found. Even the most daunting of these programs can be learned with dedication and practice.

Another factor to consider is that of how much time one can dedicate to learning a new program. Every program has a learning curve and the more complex the program, the greater the learning time will be. In order to successfully use these programs, one needs to have specific knowledge of concepts such as image and data manipulation. Other keys skills that are very helpful to have include drawing or modeling, a good understanding of lighting, and sound knowledge of colour and proportional theory. Furthermore, the most complex 3D modelling programs also require knowledge of planes, normals, vertices, and line.

Computer capacity can be an issue when running these complex programs. Many times new hardware is required in order to successfully operate these packages. Therefore, one's budget needs to be considered. There are at least two reasons for this. The first, like mentioned above, is new hardware. The computer systems required to run these types of programs can typically cost at least ten times that of a standard office computer. The second reason is the cost of the program itself. The top tier packages can cost nearly as much as a house. In addition, once an animation is designed, the programs need to render it - that is it needs to generate the finished images. Complex renderings, such as those being made into film, require even more hardware. It is not really possible for one computer to handle this type of job. These renders are accomplished by a group of computers, which have been networked together into what is called a render farm.

At the top end of the scale, digital movie studios require an unbelievable amount of RAM (random access memory.) The required storage capacity for these files is extraordinarily large (sometimes reaching a terabyte.)

For those who need simple web animations, a program that connects images into a series of slides may serve best. These slides are then played one after another, creating the illusion of motion. This is how motion pictures work. These programs usually take the least amount of computer resources when compared to the more complex 3D packages. This type of software can typically run on an new computer without causing problems.

Simple animation needs, such as those used for web design, will often require a fairly simple program that will link together a series of slides. When displayed in rapid succession, these images create the illusion of motion, in the same manner as movies and videos. This type of program does not place much burden on a computer. Most of the time, these solutions can run on a good office computer.
